Summer Well

I’ll say it right off the bat I would rather vacation Winter than vacation Summer; which means I’d rather go from warm all the time to cold for a treat than the other way around. I’m considering a change of venue, or at least real long extended training camps running all year long.

I am here  in Hawaii for a training camp/ holiday. So far it has been more training camp than Holiday. The weather has been nice, 25-28 degrees, even when it is overcast it is still hot. We are staying in Waikiki for the first half of the camp where it is super busy and there are a ton of tourists. There is a nice gym in the hotel so I have been doing most runs on that for now. We also have a large pool overlooking the ocean that I have been using after my runs.

After a few runs on the treadmill I finally got out side for a run. I headed away from town towards Diamondhead mountain or crater, not sure what it is, but it looks more like a small mountain to me. After running through a ton of tourists for the first mile the side walks thinned out and started to climb up and up. It was a nice run along the coast and the houses reminded me of beach drive in Victoria. To keep it simple and ensure I didn’t get lost I just ran an out and back, a little over 5 miles out and the same back to the hotel. It was hot, sunny and humid but that doesn’t seem to be bothering me at all right now. I hit up the ocean just steps from my hotel after this run which was nice, I don’t usually like swimming in the ocean, but when it is this warm it’s hard to pass up.

For the second part of the training camp/ vacation we are heading to the North beach at the Turtle Bay resort where it is supposed to be a lot quieter; and I am told there are some trails to run on.  We have a condo on the beach where we can cook which will be a nice change from having to eat out all the time.

I have another week out here so I will have to take advantage of the great training conditions before heading back home to the rain and cold. My fitness is already coming back quickly and I am itching to race again. Next up for me is the Bazan Bay 5km, a short one for me, but I am leaving the marathons alone till the fall so now is the time to work on the shorter distances. So with three weeks till my next race I should be miles ahead of where I was at the  Steveston 8km.
