That was a long way to go for 3 seconds.
But it was worth it. I may not have taken off as much time as I wanted from my 10km PR but with the work I put in this week I guess now I am not surprised. I was not fresh like I was before my first stanford race and that is the only way it could be as Ottawa is the important race of the season. There is no point in compromising training for a race that is just a means to an end. I felt alright in the race itself, but early on I paused and looked back and there was no one behind me; I was dead last and I didn’t like that at all. But I stayed patient. I did a lot more work this time around in the middle of the race on my own stuck between chase groups. I think I hit 8km in 23:20 and figured I would be well off my current 29:15 best but I was able to get moving in the last 2 km and catch a few guys and finishing strong in 29:12.
Now I have a few days left here in San Francisco to take advantage of the nice training weather.
Today Richard and I got out for a long run, 20 miles out on the dykes out here in San Mateo. Richard ran with me for 8 miles, then jumped on the bike and rode the rest with me. I felt good during the run and it was nice to do a run in the heat and humidity and have it go well. I managed 20 miles under 2 hours and the last 4 miles at 5:35 average. It was nice to get the run out of the way early and relax the rest of the day. I managed a nap later in the day and an ice bath after that. I have another day of mileage runs tommorow then a workout at Stanford U. on Wednesday before Richard and I head back to Bellingham and then back home. 20 days left till Ottawa!
